Initiative

Do today what others won’t so you’ll have tomorrow what others don’t. - John Addison

Initiative is the starting point with believing and having a burning desire that you can do whatever you set out to do or become what you want to become. Self-belief is necessary and required to have initiative. You must do the things you think you can't do to help activate your belief! It’s your greatest gift. The power in your PPC only activates once you believe 100% in yourself, more than anything else. Not 85% or 99%. This belief is first and foremost! You must have 100% because nothing can break your belief at 100%, and action happens when you have it. You must know you’re good, smart, and talented enough to achieve your vision (dreams and goals).

BELIEF = POWER ACTIVATION

Your self-belief starts with courage. Courage isn't the absence of FEAR, but your judgment that your vision is more important than FEAR. There are 2 types of courage to act on with initiative: (1) the courage to get started and (2) the courage not to quit! Once you understand that, know your real courage will show itself best in hours of adversity. All the fire, power, and thrust in a launch happens in the beginning, and the beginning is where you have the most courage.

Initiative involves your drive, which combines your courage, ambition, energy, tenacity, leadership motivation, integrity, self-confidence, mental proficiency, and business knowledge. It’s part of your decision-making process that helps you obtain positive results. If your situation isn't good, you must create an internal drive to get out of where you come from. Initiative also creates an achievement drive, high effort, ambition, and energy to exhibit. You learn to act. It’s a key to leadership self-awareness, too. This self-awareness also promotes your decision-making process. It’s also an underlying emotional competency with a conscientious drive for leaders to achieve different leadership styles while achieving their goals. The military even works to produce and sustain agile, adaptive, and innovative leaders who act with boldness and initiative to execute missions in dynamic, complex situations. When you enact initiative, you encourage positive energy worthy of an investment in time and energy. It’s an essential dimension of empowerment. Empowerment allows you to build networks, relationships, and teams to create new structures and organizations for success.

Before the devastation from the destruction of what was called Black Wall Street in 1921, the Greenwood community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, encouraged Black people to exploit initiative economically through entrepreneurship, and they thrived more than White people on Wall Street did. Initiative is powerful! It’s the beginning point of all your actions to accomplish anything. Without initiative, you’re inactive, stagnant, and unsuccessful. You’re worth as much as the actions or tasks you busy yourself with. You start to gain knowledge without arrogance. You seek to find counsel, not opinions. You gain confidence because you started your actions, and your confidence begins to build your competence. You shake off the FEAR that keeps you stagnant. There’s that emotion, FEAR! FEAR clouds your future thoughts. FEAR is your enemy’s product designed to destroy your creative imagination. FEAR costs you to have success in your leadership because it doesn’t exist until you make it live. When that happens, FEAR is dangerous to you.

I discussed a little of this earlier in the book, and it’s just as relevant to discuss it again. You’re programmed for success but get conditioned for failure. The conditioning can come from many acts of FEAR. For most who grew up in disadvantaged environments, these acts of fear are promoted more than ever, and they’re the death of your initiative. For others, they used these acts of FEAR as fuel to persevere through them to succeed in their lives. I call them Initiative Killers!

Initiative Killers

STATUS QUO BIAS (safe zone): You are often hard-wired to do nothing, even when your instincts or data say otherwise.

LOSS AVERSION: You have a deep-rooted feeling that avoiding the loss of $100 is much more valuable than gaining $1000.

DECISION PARALYSIS: Since everything isn’t understood, you don’t make a decision.

REGENCY BIAS: You have a habit of believing your future will resemble the recent past.

REGRET AVOIDANCE: This leads you to follow the crowd. If things turn out badly, you feel better knowing that you did what everyone else thought was smarter rather than stand out doing the opposite.

Failure to act is a serious issue or situation that kills your initiative. Keep in mind that two significant mistakes can happen with initiative. Sitting still when you should be acting and acting when you should sit still are mistakes to avoid with your initiative. Improving your initiative takes proper self-leadership development.

Act on your initiative and prepare to take full responsibility for all your actions. One of the primary differences between an extraordinary executive leader and a leader who manages only to get by is that extraordinary executive leaders learn early in life and their career they are responsible for their own actions. No one can make them successful or keep them from becoming an extraordinary executive leader but them. Taking the initiative means assuming a leadership role that positions you for praise and criticism. The extraordinary executive leader is going to be the one who shares the credit for success with others and assumes full responsibility for the failures or temporary setbacks. They know when they accept responsibility for their actions, they gain the respect of others while forging their future. You must intentionally work on your initiative to succeed in your life and leadership.

The opposite of initiative is good intentions and procrastination. Good intentions are useless unless they're followed up with the right action. They might be an appropriate mental starting point but will go nowhere unless you follow those thoughts through with action. Don’t confuse good intentions with initiative. Acting on most of your average ideas is far more valuable than the flash of genius that resides with good intentions. Initiative is the launching pad towards your DMG. Your DMG determines your legacy. Today, you’ll move to where you aim your initiative. Tomorrow, you'll be heading where you aimed your initiative today.

Procrastination is a bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what you should've done the day before yesterday. The most dangerous and destructive habit to develop in leadership is procrastination. It robs you of your initiative. When you put things off once, it's easier to put them off again and again until the habit is firmly ingrained in your leadership character that it's difficult to break. The effects of the procrastination habit are cumulative. This means that you can build on it, but the obvious cure is action. You'll be surprised how quickly you begin to feel better about yourself and your environment when you get moving! Action doesn't bring happiness, but you guarantee there's no happiness without action.

The habitual procrastinator is always an expert giving excuses. If you search long and hard enough, you can always find dozens of reasons why something can't or shouldn't be done and a few reasons why it should or could. It's easier to rationalize that it's too difficult, too expensive, or too time-consuming than to accept the idea that if you’re willing to work hard, smart, and long enough, you can accomplish anything. Instead of making an excuse, make a commitment. If you find that you frequently invent excuses for why you don't do something or have a million reasons why something didn't work out as you planned, it's time for a reality check. Stop explaining and start doing!

Don’t Delay! Do it Today!

Nothing much can be done for a leader who will not take initiative. Personal and leadership initiatives are the same and keys to success. A little initiative will improve your leadership 9 times out of 10. Understand people will not give you their full assistance and support unless you take the initiative first.

A 3xP Leadership™ Framework for Strengthening Entrepreneurial Effectiveness for Underrepresented Entrepreneurs

Dr. NDO is excited to introduce a new body of work from:

Purpose, People, Process, and Performance: A 3xP Leadership™ Framework for Strengthening Entrepreneurial Effectiveness Among Underrepresented Entrepreneurs

This work advances a leadership-centered approach to entrepreneurship education and development. Too often, entrepreneurship is framed only around ideas, business models, pitching, funding, and market entry. While those elements matter, they are not enough.

Entrepreneurs do not just need to know how to start businesses.
They need to know how to lead them.

This paper introduces the 3xP Leadership™ FrameworkPurpose, People, Process, and Performance — as a practical and research-informed model for helping underrepresented entrepreneurs build clarity, strengthen leadership capacity, create repeatable systems, and measure outcomes that move beyond survival toward sustainable impact.

At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful belief: Entrepreneurship is not just about business creation. It is about possibility creation.

This body of work reflects my commitment to advancing entrepreneurship education, leadership development, and economic mobility for Black entrepreneurs, underrepresented founders, veterans, adult learners, and community-based business leaders.

The future of entrepreneurship education must prepare people not only to launch ventures, but to lead with clarity, discipline, accountability, and purpose.

That is the work of entrepreneurship.
That is the work of leadership.
That is the work of 3xP Leadership™.

Build Anyway!

The one constant in life is when you build something worth having 🦾 someone's gonna try and take it from you.

It may be your idea.
It may be your opportunity.
It may be your influence.
It may be your reputation.
It may be the very thing you sacrificed years to build.

That's not pessimism. That's reality.

History teaches us that valuable things attract attention. Some people will admire what you build. Some will support it. Others will attempt to duplicate it, undermine it, discredit it, or position themselves to benefit from your hard work without making the same investment.

The answer isn't fear. The answer: Build Anyway!

✅ Build with integrity.
✅ Build with excellence.
✅ Build systems that outlast personalities.
☑️ Build relationships that create loyalty.
☑️ Build a reputation that cannot be easily replicated.

In 3xP Leadership™, I show that sustainable success is built through Purpose, People, Process, and Performance. When those four pillars are strong, what you've built becomes bigger than a single idea. It becomes your legacy.

Don't spend your time worrying about who's trying to take what you've built.
Spend your time building something so impactful, so valuable, and so authentic that no one can duplicate the leadership behind it.

🛑 Because people may copy your product.
🛑 They may copy your service.
🛑 They may even copy your strategy.

🏛️ But they can never copy your purpose.

When Conflict Becomes a Competitive Advantage: Why Great Leaders Stop Avoiding It

3xP Leadership® Conflict Strategy

In When Conflict Becomes a Competitive Advantage, The BlackPrint of Leadership and 3xP Leadership® challenge one of leadership’s most costly misconceptions: that conflict is something to avoid. Instead, this article reframes conflict as a leadership signal, an indicator of pressure, growth, misalignment, and opportunity within an organization. Through the lens of Purpose, People, Process, and Performance, the article shows that effective leaders do not suppress friction; they diagnose it, structure it, and lead it in ways that strengthen trust, sharpen execution, and improve organizational performance. Happy Kwanzaa!

Happy Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa isn't a religious holiday; it's a values-based observance designed to strengthen family, community, & cultural continuity.

Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration observed from December 26 to January 1 that honors African heritage, values, and community, particularly within the African American experience. It reinforces cultural identity, collective responsibility, and purposeful living through reflection & action.

Kwanzaa is centered on the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles), each representing a foundational value drawn from African philosophies and traditions. Each day of the celebration focuses on one principle, encouraging individuals & families to reflect on how these values guide their personal conduct, LEADERSHIP, & contribution to the community.

The seven principles are:

Umoja – Unity
Kujichagulia – Self-Determination
Ujima – Collective Work and Responsibility
Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
Nia – Purpose
Kuumba – Creativity
Imani – Faith

The symbols of Kwanzaa:

The kinara (candleholder)
Mishumaa saba (seven candles)
Mazao (crops)
Mkeka (mat)

They reinforce themes of heritage, work, achievement, and unity.

Kwanzaa serves as a time of intentional reflection, recommitment, & renewal, calling individuals to live with purpose, uphold shared responsibility, create collectively, & sustain faith in themselves & their communities throughout the year.

Umoja (Unity) is more than a principle, it’s a leadership discipline.

Within 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Umoja shows up as intentional alignment:

Purpose unites vision so teams know why they exist.

People are respected, valued, and connected across differences.

Process creates shared standards and accountability.

Performance reflects collective ownership, not individual ego.

When leaders practice Umoja, silos dissolve, trust accelerates, and results become sustainable. Unity is not sameness, it’s alignment around purpose, commitment to people, disciplined process, and shared performance outcomes.

That”s how unity becomes strategy.
That’s how culture becomes execution.

Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) is leadership in its purest form.

Within 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Kujichagulia is the decision to define who you are, what you stand for, and how you will lead—before the world tries to define it for you.

🔹 Purpose demands self-definition. Leaders who lack clarity of purpose end up inheriting other people’s agendas. Kujichagulia calls leaders to name their mission, values, and direction with intention.
🔹 People thrive when leaders model ownership. Self-determined leaders empower others to think, decide, and lead rather than wait for permission.
🔹 Process turns intention into discipline. Self-determination without structure is motivation without movement. Process makes leadership repeatable and scalable.
🔹 Performance is the evidence. Results reveal whether self-definition is real or merely aspirational.

Kujichagulia reminds us that leadership is not assigned—it’s claimed.

3xP Leadership ensures that what we claim is aligned, disciplined, and impactful.

Define yourself. Lead deliberately. Perform consistently.

#Kujichagulia #3xPLeadership #SelfDetermination #PurposePeopleProcessPerformance #DrNoDaysOff #LeadershipDevelopment #ExecutiveLeadership #tmtsi

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) isn’t a cultural slogan, it’s an executive leadership mandate.

Through 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Ujima becomes operational.

Purpose aligns individuals around shared responsibility.

People are developed to contribute beyond job titles.

Process ensures accountability is collective, not selective.

Performance reflects outcomes owned by the whole, not blamed on a few.

Organizations fail when responsibility is fragmented. They thrive when leaders build cultures where success & failure are shared, addressed, & improved together.

Ujima is how leadership stops being individual ambition & becomes collective excellence.

#Ujima #3xPLeadership #PurposePeopleProcessPerformance #ExecutiveLeadership #LeadershipCulture #DrNoDaysOff #tmtsi

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) is strategic leadership, not charity.

Through 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Ujamaa becomes a disciplined approach to building sustainable organizations & communities.

Purpose clarifies why wealth creation must be collective.

People are developed as contributors and stakeholders, not just consumers.

Process ensures ethical systems for value creation and distribution.

Performance measures success by shared prosperity, not isolated gain.

Leaders who ignore Ujamaa build fragile empires. Leaders who practice it build ecosystems that last.

Cooperative economics isn’t anti-profit, it’s pro-people and pro-legacy.

#Ujamaa #3xPLeadership #PurposePeopleProcessPerformance #CooperativeEconomics #ExecutiveLeadership #DrNoDaysOff #tmtsi

Nia (Purpose) is the foundation of all effective leadership.

Within 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Nia is not abstract, it’s operational. Purpose defines why leaders exist and who they are accountable to.

People are developed with intention, not convenience.

Process aligns daily decisions to long-term mission.

Performance confirms whether the purpose is truly being fulfilled or merely stated.

Organizations drift when purpose is unclear. Communities fracture when leadership lacks direction. Nia restores focus, discipline, & meaning to LEADERSHIP work.

Purpose is not inspiration, it’s responsibility.

#Nia #3xPLeadership #PurposePeopleProcessPerformance #LeadershipWithPurpose #ExecutiveLeadership #DrNoDaysOff #tmtsi

Kuumba (Creativity) isn’t optional in leadership; it’s a responsibility.

Through 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Kuumba becomes disciplined innovation:

Purpose defines why creativity is needed.

People are empowered to think, build, and improve without fear.

Process turns ideas into scalable solutions.

Performance measures creativity by impact, not imagination alone.

Leaders who fail to create leave systems worse than they found them. Leaders who practice Kuumba design environments that improve, evolve, and endure.

Creativity is how leadership leaves a legacy.

#Kuumba #3xPLeadership #PurposePeopleProcessPerformance #CreativeLeadership #ExecutiveLeadership #DrNoDaysOff #tmtsi

Imani (Faith) is the stabilizing force of leadership when conditions are uncertain.

Within 3xP Leadership® (Purpose · People · Process · Performance), Imani isn’t blind belief; it’s disciplined confidence rooted in values, preparation, and consistency.

Purpose anchors faith in a clear mission.

People are trusted, developed, and believed in, even before results are visible.

Process reinforces faith through repeatable standards and ethical action.

Performance validates faith through sustained outcomes over time.

Leaders without Imani panic in pressure. They consistently operate in panic management. Leaders with Imani stay steady, decisive, and trusted.

Faith isn’t passive, it’s practiced.

Issues vs. Problems Mindset

A 3xP Leadership® Perspective on Growth, Accountability, and Performance

Issues vs. Problems Mindset presents a critical leadership distinction that many professionals overlook: not every disruption is a disaster, and every difficulty need not be treated as a breakdown. Through The BlackPrint of Leadership and 3xP Leadership®, this article shows that strong leaders develop the mindset to classify challenges wisely, respond proportionately, and keep organizations focused on progress rather than emotional overreaction. By connecting discernment to Purpose, People, Process, and Performance, the article argues that leadership is not just about solving what is wrong; it’s about correctly identifying the challenge in front of you so that energy, strategy, and execution remain aligned.
